MWS Girls’ Residence has a New Home

MWS Girls’ Residence has a New Home

On 9 Apr 2021, after 3 years of extensive work, MWS Girls’ Residence has finally moved into its new home at 600 Upper Thomson Road, Block A.

Housed in a refurbished two-storey building, the residents now enjoy a more spacious and homely environment. Instead of dormitories, they can rest in cosy bedrooms. There are also more therapy rooms, a larger library filled with a range of materials to engage the residents’ minds and emotions; and a high-ceiling multi-purpose hall fitted with full-length mirrors designed for various programmes.

In line with the Residence’s trauma-informed care approach, the overall layout and space use, furnishings and colour scheme are designed to promote a sense of calm, safety and dignity. The residents will also be involved in choosing the new furniture, look and feel of the chill-out and lounge area.

“I love the candy colours of this new space and how much more homely it feels. The trampoline is my favourite because jumping makes me feel good and free!” – Resident of MWS Girls’ Residence, 16 years old.

Minister Masagos visits MWS Family Service Centre - Tampines

On 30 Apr 2021, MWS hosted Minister Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for Social and Family Development, at MWS Family Service Centre (FSC) - Tampines.

During the 2-hour engagement, Mr Masagos and the MWS FSC team exchanged views on Singapore’s evolving social service landscape and how social service agencies can partner with the government and other community agencies to better meet the needs of Singaporeans.

Café Joy is Open for 'Business’

Café Joy is ‘Open for Business'

Much to the delight of residents and staff, the long-awaited café at the newly renovated MWS Bethany Nursing Home - Choa Chu Kang is finally open.

Christened ‘Café Joy’, it hopes to bring smiles to guests who drop by for a cuppa.

Café Joy is managed by 28 of our very own nursing home residents who have been trained by the MWS Allied Health team and supported by MWS staff and volunteers. The residents serve in roles such as cashiers, baristas and café hygienists.

This initiative ties in with the MWS nursing homes’ philosophy of care which focusses on quality of life that is resident-directed.

The Home hopes to open the café to the community in the future.

New MWS Senior Care Centre Opening in Eunos

New MWS Senior Care Centre Opening in Eunos

The new MWS Senior Care Centre (MWS SCC) - Eunos is slated to open at the end of 2021. It will be co-located with the new Eunos Polyclinic, operated by SingHealth Polyclinics.

The MWS SCC can serve up to 60 seniors who are frailer and require day care while their family members are at work. It will also offer 15 Community Rehabilitation client sessions per day. About 70% of the day-care places will be set aside for those with dementia.

This new addition will allow MWS to enhance our continuum of eldercare services for seniors in the community.

Keep fit with MWS!

Keep Fit with MWS!

As part of our outreach to seniors, MWS produced its first exercise video featuring 10 strengthening exercises. These exercises can also be found in the MWS Befriender’s Toolkit, a tool that has been produced to support MWS Befrienders in reaching out to vulnerable and frail seniors in the community.

Simple to do and easy to follow, why not use them yourself to stay fit?

Check out the exercises here, and send the link to someone who may benefit from them!

Befrienders to Seniors Needed!

Befrienders to Seniors Needed!

Since May 2021, MWS Senior Activity Centre (SAC) - Kebun Baru had been piloting a new Eldercare Centre Baseline Service Model developed by the Ministry of Health.

The Centre’s new focus is to reach out to every senior living in the housing blocks assigned to it. The main objective is understand the profiles and needs of the seniors, and to encourage them to age well in the community. We urgently need more befrienders for these extensive outreach efforts.

The befriender’s role is to encourage seniors who are active and physically well to join the Centre’s activities. For those who need assistance in daily living activities and have limited social or family support, the befriender can check in on them weekly to offer support and monitor their wellbeing.

The other MWS SACs will adopt this new Eldercare Model at a later stage.

Keen to volunteer? You can do so on a regular or ad-hoc basis, and all it takes is 2 hours each time. Email volunteer@mws.sg today to learn more.
