Seniors from MWS Senior Activity Centres (SACs) and Active Ageing Centres (AACs) joined in the National Celebration of Seniors event held on 5 Oct 2022 at Sports Hub.
The event was organised by Ministry of Health, in partnership with Sport Singapore and Council for Third Age, as part of the refreshed Action Plan for Successful Ageing.
Held in conjunction with the International Day of Older Persons, the inaugural event aimed to encourage seniors to pursue an active and meaningful lifestyle. This aligns with MWS’ strength-based approach of empowering seniors to take charge of their own health and well-being through preventive measures and meaningful engagement with other seniors and the community.
Hands-on booths at the event allowed seniors to learn more about the active ageing programmes, courses and volunteering opportunities offered in the community. They also had a go at various games suitable for seniors at the modified sports stations.
Seniors from different eldercare centres also competed against each other in friendly games like walking football, seated volleyball and walking Captain’s Ball. Participants from MWS won multiple trophies, while having oodles of fun!
70-year-old Rasul Gerald Abdullah, a senior from MWS AAC – Golden Lily@Pasir Ris, said, “Participating in the sports competitions made me feel young and energetic; and had me reminiscing the good old ‘kampong’ days. The event has encouraged and inspired seniors like me to keep fit physically in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle.”
